Kindle News: Amazon's 1-day-only special on Kindle DX Graphite - $110 off

Amazon has a 1-day discount on its Kindle DX Graphite today, August 10, Friday.

The The DXG is on a special one-day sale for $110 off and Amazon last did a big sale for one day on this model during Black Friday Week 2011 when they discounted The DXG by $120.

  At that time we wondered if they were being phased out.

 But it's almost a year later now.
Amazon's wording:

' Today only, August 10, 2012, get Kindle DX for $269 (regularly $379). Kindle DX includes Free 3G wireless that works globally. '

The email I received added, "while supplies last."  However, the product page doesn't have that wording.

If you click on the image at the top of today's blog, you'll get the larger image.  Then if you click on "Next" while there -- at the top-right while viewing, there's a zoomed in version of that photo so that you can see the font display better.

  Also, here are reactions to the DXG by the tough-minded Mobileread Forum folks, a crowd which tended to favor the Sony display before the Kindle Graphite DX was released.

A 6" Kindle? Or the largish 9.7" DX
This was a common question, and I was asked about this today.  I wrote a blog article, when the first Kindle DX was released, about questions you should ask yourself before deciding between a smaller, more carryable Kindle and the larger, more readable one.
  The advice would be the same for the current 6" and the DX Graphite though, except that the current 6" Kindle Touch has considerably darker fonts than the old Kindle 2 had.

I use the Kindle Fire more, but for PDFs with smaller print, I reach for the DX Graphite.

Spotify (Kindle Fire Edition)
 
Spotify is a streaming music subscription service that many are already using, and if you already have the subscription to millions of songs "on demand," you can use the app on the Kindle Fire now to make playlists and share the music with others.

  The app has one free feature, which that is radio-streaming only.
  The more popular use is unlimited streaming, without ads, of new music on-demand (and the ability to play some of it offline) and that costs $9.99/mo.  You can start a 48-hour free trial "when you log in" (via Kindle Fire or another mobile device) "to Spotify with your Facebook account," and if you like the service, you can choose to extend your free trial by 30 days.  If you're happy with only the free radio-listening part, you can use that for free.

  It's version 0.5.2.89, and the current version doesn't have a Landscape mode.  I've never used the service but have read that others enjoy it quite a bit.

  Update - Just read some caveats that Spotify users should know about:

' Although users can stream music for free from the desktop client, free streaming is limited to 2.5 hours per week and 10 hours a month (unused time stacks up to 10 hours).

 Listening for free will play ads regularly, usually for around 30 seconds. Unlimited streaming subscriptions, sans advertising, begin at just $5.99 a month, rising to $9.99, and include offline listening and the ability to play music through connected devices

  Spotify currently holds a 4- out of 5-star rating and is almost essential for users not planning to buy music. The service finds itself in a market with rivals including Last.fm and Rdio.  Spotify's draw is that, although buying music buying is an offered feature of the service, it is not a requirement.  In fact, $5.99 is the cost of an album on iTunes.  How many albums could be listened to over a month on Spotify? '

Kindle News: Clarifying Amazon Cloud announcements and changes - Update/Revision 3

Revised/Updated late evening August 6

On June 12, I wrote about the Amazon Cloud Player app for iPhone and iPod Touch and that the Amazon Appstore was likely to hit Europe this summer.

  Both are obvious signs of Amazon's plans to expand access to its digital media wherever it can, although the Kindle Fire hasn't been sold internationally yet, due to time-intense negotiations for "fresh agreements for books, music, and movies in every market they launch," per 3G.co.uk's Simon D. Thomas.
  And they're strongly rumored to be adding another Kindle Fire with more hardware power to their line (with a good push by the Google Nexus 7" tablet).

On July 31, Amazon announced in a press release their music licensing agreements with Sony, EMI, Universal, Warner, and over 150 independent distributors, aggregators and music publishers.

  They say that their "scan and match technology" gives customers a faster, easier way to "get all of their music from their computers to the cloud," from which they can then play their music on their favorite devices -- Kindle Fire, iPhone iPod Touch, Android devices and any web browser -- and soon, Roku streaming players and Sonos home entertainment systems.

  New features:

• Any Amazon mp3 purchases, including mp3's bought from Amazon in the past, are automatically saved to Cloud Player, serving as a secure backup of the music bought from Amazon, free of charge.
• Amazon scans customers' iTunes and Windows Media Player libraries (I don't put mine in either of these libraries), matching the music on the computers to Amazon's 20 million song catalog.
  
    Any matches, even if purchased from iTunes or ripped from CDs "are instantly made available in Cloud Player and are upgraded for free to high-quality 256 Kbps audio.
  
    Music that customers have already uploaded to Cloud Players also will be upgraded."

It seems to me that any imported MP3s that had been in the old free drive might now be seen as part of the Cloud Player's storage and playback of songs up to the subscription limit OR it might be left alone and still stored on the Cloud Drive with no playback possible (as only Cloud Player can play it back).  Cloud Player has been separated from Cloud Drive, but it too is Free if you use space for no more than 250 imported songs.

MY question:  can you just store music files in the free 5-gig general storage with no intention of playback?  The Cloud Player is for music that you want to store AND play back.

  Other new aspects of Cloud Player, which is now available in two tiers: "Free" and "Premium."

• Cloud Player Free customers
    .  can store all mp3's purchased from Amazon at no cost and also
    .  import, store, and play back up to 250 songs from PC or Mac to Cloud Player, at no charge.
• Cloud Player Premium customers ($25/year)
    .  can store all mp3's purchased from Amazon at no cost and also
    .  import, store, and play back up to 250,000 songs in Cloud Player, at no further charge.

  In both cases, any Amazon-purchased mp3's are not counted against the limits of either plan.

  HOWEVER, though their press release doesn't mention it, their Manage your Cloud page also shows (at least for me) a NON-Free and NON-Premium category:
  20 GB of file storage space + Cloud Player w/ up to 250 imported songs, at $10.00/year
  That provides an additional 15 GB of file storage space over the Free plan.

That's confusing.   The $10/yr plan should have a label between Free and Premium, as it costs less than the premium $25/yr+ plans because it provides 20 Gigs of storage space but allows only 250 non-Amazon-purchased mp3s ("imported") rather than 250,000.

  The new Cloud Player features were to be automatically delivered to Kindle Fire users during the week following the July 31 announcement.
  Customers can also visit the Amazon Cloud Player page on the web or download the app on iOS or Android.

I neglected to mention the "Importer File Formats"
Amazon's "Importing Music into Cloud Player" page has a section on these.

  Supported File Types: (See asterisk explanation below.)
  .  .mp3 -- Standard non-DRM file format
  .  .m4a -- AAC files (Windows and Mack, including iTunes store purchased files)
                and Apple lossless files* (Mac OS only)

Starting July 31, 2012:
  Cloud Drive is being used for general file storage and
  Cloud Player will be used for music storage and playback.

  Per the same press release, Amazon's MP3 Store has over 20 million songs with everyday low prices on best-selling albums.
  "All Amazon MP3s are DRM-free, work on just about any mp3-playing device and can be played from Cloud Player on Kindle Fire, Android phones and tablets, iPhones, iPads, iPods, Macs and Pcs.
  Customers can also access the MP3 store via the iHeartRadio, Shazam, TuneIn Radio and SoundHound Android apps."


The 3 types of  *Free*  Amazon server storage
  .  Amazon's 5 free gigs of Cloud Drive space for Amazon customers, globally,
        for ANY data files, plus
  .  Another 5 free gigs for Kindle owners' personal documents, plus
  .  Free Cloud Player space for 250 imported music files that can be played back.

  I find that most Kindle owners I talk to don't know that Amazon gives all customers, globally, 5 free gigs of Cloud Drive space for data files of any kind.  That includes videos, photos, documents, and backup of books you didn't buy from Amazon (as long as they're not digital-rights-protected by the publisher/vendor) and any of your personal documents that you'd liked backed up externally.
  It also can include music but this won't be for playback or streaming, as playback is done via Cloud Player, which has separate storage space for music files, which you intend for playback or streaming.

  Amazon also sets aside, for Kindle owners, 5 additional gigs for personal docs -- and this also includes non-Amazon books that are not rights-protected.  This also applies to documents like Word Docs, or web pages sent to the Kindle via various Send-to utilities including Amazon's own.  And recently, Amazon added SYNC'g of the Kindle area personal docs in the way that Kindle books are sync'd between devices.

  Both the general free storage globally and the free personal docs storage and sync'g of them (if you send the latter to Amazon for the Kindle-owner's document storage area) are unique features not found with other e-readers.

Snugg Kindle Fire Case at 71% discount
The image for this blog entry is of a Snugg Kindle Fire Case with leather cover and flip stand (for horizontal and vertical use), made by "the Creators of the Number 1 best selling iPad 2 case."

  Normally $34.99, it's $9.99, so is 71% off and is listed as Prime, fulfilled by Amazon, and sold by Charon Int, which gets a 4.9 stars average rating out from 11,228 ratings and a 97% positive feedback.

  CAVEAT and TIP: The '1' review ratings are complaints that in Landscape mode (a mode I use the most), the cover goes over the Exit button and some say it covers some other essential menu buttons too. This would be a No-Buy for me, except that Charon writes, to at least one of these reviews, that they discovered that they had a "bad batch" produced during the start of production and that if you use the 'contact seller' link on your order and let them know you received a bad one (which apparently affected an earlier batch), Charon can bring up your information and get you a replacement.

  Amazon has a 30-day full refund policy anyway.
  Some also say that the stand is not that stable, but 93 of 122 reviews give it a 4 or 5 star rating (66 are 5-star reviews).

  As for me, I tried several and the one I like most (somewhat padded and it all works well) is the ACase (slim,padded), which I describe, along with other cases on an earlier blog entry.   It's still only $12 and has Prime shipping also.  It's not, however, designed to stand up vertically though.  I do that by just bending the sides in, but it isn't the stablest arrangement if you want vertical.

Amazon Local Special Offers
I hope that those who are interested in AmazonLocal's special orders are checking them daily, and early for some of them.  This morning I saw the deal for a free voucher to get $3.99 toward any video rental or purchase from Amazon Instant Video, to be used by Aug 12, and I grabbed one.  After I got back, I was going to put an alert on this but at noon, I see the offer is gone as they're "sold out" of whatever allotment they had.
  So if you're into these, check them daily & early.  I didn't open a Kindle today but got my notice by e-mail.

Discounted / Price Dropped Kindle eBooks II - the ongoing Kindle Forum message thread
  I haven't mentioned these for awhile, but there is an ongoing message thread in which Kindle owners share information on recent drops in pricing on specific Kindle books, often with some added info by the person posting it.

  Here's a link to the thread starting from August 4.  There are fewer alerts the last two days than there used to be, but enough to take a look.
  An unusual alert there on August 3 was not for a Kindle book but for a subscription to Newsweek at $5 for 6 months of both print and Kindle editions, but that changed to $24 the next day -- so that's a forum thread you might want to watch.
  The link I gave is to a specific day to start, but you can look at previous days or keep up with ongoing alerts after that, as Amazon keeps track of the last message# that you read, so that you can start from there next time.
  Prices are discounted often for only a very short time and are promos, and that's another reason to watch the list.

  A current item: A complete mp3 album of James Taylor's Greatest Hits for 99 cents.  I've no idea how long that price will be there.  Some discounted prices are good for half a day, some for 2 weeks.

  There are also books that won book awards or were short-listed for them, at much lower prices (for however long) and also one from Hachette, "The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe" by J. Randy Taraborrelli, "for $2.99 (down from $12.99)."

Kindle News: Clues that new e-Ink Kindles MAY be coming?

A set of observations on Kindle product page wording from commenter Blackbeard Blackbeard sent me a few days ago a couple of observations that he's given me permission to quote:

  1.  ' Right now the Kindle Touch is "Expected to ship in 1 to 2 weeks"
          [AB Note: Today, it's showing "Expected to ship in 4 to 7 days."

  2.  the Kindle Touch 3g is "Currently unavailable, we don't know when or if this item will be back in stock."

  This is highly unusual, and it looks like they've drawn down stock prior to a new release. Keep a lookout!'

Yes, considering that Jeff Bezos said quite a lot, in his interview last week with Len Edgerly [transcript], about the attractions of the 3G models of the Kindle (and added that people who own these seem to read the most, according to their stats), this language about not knowing When or If the Kindle Touch 3G will be back in stock is VERY odd.

  The "currently unavailable" detail given is one of the pre-set reasons when an item is not in stock and it could have been just a programming error that it was showing up that way, but it still is showing that way today, 3 days later.

  Amazon is notorious for not being willing to say anything about a forthcoming model.   So, what's the story here?

  I wouldn't want to say something that could hurt Amazon sales while being untrue, but that statement on their product page is just glaring.

  The WiFi version that is expected be shipped in 4-7 days suggests at least limited supplies with re-ordering of another batch but that would also seem to be very conservative ordering of a high-volume item.

CNet's David Carnoy adds another indication
  In the meantime, CNet's David Carnoy, who has in the past received early word from Amazon though not currently, points out today that Amazon is offering Basic Kindles (the non-touch/no-keyboard model) for $47 (a 40% discount) to Amazon.com Rewards Visa Card holders, although they're limited to one promo code per customer and the offer comes with the disclaimer that limited quantities are available.

When we remember the earlier rumor from DigiTimes that an announcement was planned around July 31, and this did not happen, it would seem an obscured announcement :-).

Carnoy writes, cautiously, that the $47 price for Basic Kindles, even if only for Amazon.com Rewards Visa Card holders, "would seem to indicate that Amazon is starting to clear stock to make room for new models."

Are thse unfounded rumors in this case? Or found indicators? :-)


(Bear in mind that if one has bought a Kindle, Amazon has a 30-day full refund period if not wanting it for any reason.)

Quick Kindle Tip: A Kindle Clippings File converter

A tool to convert your Kindle Clippings file into Word, Excel or PDF files

I ran across the free tool described below while reading a comments area a couple of days ago.

ClippingsConverter tool at clippingsconverter.com.

  The site's conversion tool has been described in the useful and well-regarded makeuseof site.

This would be only for those who don't mind uploading a clippings file to an unknown website owner for conversion but is probably not a great idea for someone who may not want their personal highlighting and notes in someone else's temporary care even if the file is submitted for automated conversion.

  I've not tried it, but I like the makeuseof site and if you haven't tried yet that really informative site with a focus on how to do things, I think you'll enjoy it.

  Otherwise, I like the convenience of Amazon's annotations webpage for Kindle owners.  But the ClippingsConverter tool does the added step of putting the annotations into a separate file, in a popular format.  If you do try it and either like it or not, please let us know.
